Personal advice

Protect the inheritance you want your family to receive.

You want your partner to be secure and your children to receive the inheritance you intended. You may also want to support a young or vulnerable loved one, preserve family wealth through future relationships or plan for what care costs could mean for your home.

A trust gives you more say over how assets are held, who benefits and when they receive support. We advise on trusts for a range of family needs, including will trusts, lifetime trusts and our Home Protection Plan. We’ll start with what you want to protect and recommend the arrangement that achieves your family’s goals.

What trusts can protect

Your home. Their inheritance. The future you want for them.

Trusts can do much more than pass assets from one person to another. They can preserve an inheritance, provide for different generations and support loved ones as their needs change.

Protect an inheritance through your will

A will trust can give your partner the right to benefit from your share of the home while preserving it for your children to inherit later. It can also hold and manage an inheritance for young or vulnerable beneficiaries, with support at the times they need it.

Protect your home against future care costs

Our Home Protection Plan can protect your share of the home against your surviving partner’s future care costs. On the first death, that share passes into a will trust, with a right for the survivor to keep living in the home and an inheritance preserved for your chosen beneficiaries. We’ll bring your wills and property ownership together to put the plan in place.

Preserve what you leave through life’s changes

Trusts can help preserve a family inheritance through remarriage, divorce or financial difficulties. Keeping assets held and managed in trust allows support to be provided over time. A lifetime trust can also let trustees deal with assets held in it after your death without waiting for probate or confirmation of your personal estate.

Support loved ones when they need it

A trust can provide money for education, a home or ongoing care, with trustees managing how support is given. That can be especially valuable for children, a person with a disability or someone who needs help managing money. We’ll help you choose trustees and record the wishes that guide their decisions.

Protecting both generations

“How do we look after each other and protect our children’s inheritance?”

You can plan for both. A will trust can give the surviving partner the right to remain in the home while preserving the deceased partner’s share for chosen beneficiaries. That share can still pass to the children if the survivor later remarries or changes their will. This is especially valuable when either of you has children from an earlier relationship.

Your questions answered

Protect what matters to your family.

Tell us what you want your family to receive and what you want to protect. We’ll explain how a trust can help achieve it.

How does the Home Protection Plan work?

It is designed for couples and combines your wills with the way you own your home. When the first partner dies, their share passes into a will trust. The surviving partner has a right to keep living in the home, while the share held in trust is preserved for your chosen beneficiaries. This can protect that share against the survivor’s future care costs and preserve that share for your chosen beneficiaries if your partner later remarries.

When is a trust especially useful?

When you want to protect an inheritance for children, provide for a partner alongside children from an earlier relationship, or support a young or vulnerable beneficiary over time. Trusts can also help with planning for your home and preserving family wealth through changes in your beneficiaries’ lives. Your free consultation is where we can discuss the outcomes you want and recommend the right arrangements.

What is the difference between a will trust and a lifetime trust?

A will trust is included in your will and takes effect after your death. Our Home Protection Plan uses will trusts. A lifetime trust is established while you are alive, with selected assets transferred into it. We’ll explain how each approach can support your family and how it works alongside your will and wider family plans.
